Self Managed Super Funds (SMSF’s) are the fastest growing sector of the Australian superannuation industry (Australian Taxation Office 2010/2011) and recently has become a hot topic in The Smart Property Investor magazine among Investors and Experts alike.
Whilst the Super Annuation sector experienced asset growth of 47 per cent over the five years to 30 June 2011, SMSF’s themselves also grew in numbers by 31 per cent over that same time period. This growth has taken many by surprise seeing as SMSF’s per relatively untouched before this time.
Interestingly, the most significant rate of growth, which was seen in 2007, coincided with the government’s Superannuation Simplification measures and the new ability for fund members to use gearing. While global economic factors caused a decrease in the growth rate over the years following, 2011 saw a return to 2008 growth levels, signaling more investors moving into the SMSF area in the years ahead.
